It’s fall, y’all, and the weather is finally to the point where we’re all starting to bundle up in sweaters and jackets. After a super long summer where many of us felt pressure to keep our nails polished and legs shaved, you might be like me and feeling the urge to let it all go.

I can tell you from experience that when you look good, you feel good. Short winter days can make you feel less sunny than normal. Taking a few moments to pamper yourself every week can do wonders to boost your mood, though.

Back in the day, when I lived in Philadelphia, all I could think about when the temperature started to drop was staying warm. I couldn’t care less about being cute!

From November to April or so I didn’t give beauty a second thought. It was also the most miserable time of the year for me.

That’s why I’m intentional about taking care of myself in the winter.  It’s hard to be in a bad mood when your skin is smooth and your hair is on point.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been taking the time to switch up my fall and winter beauty routine in order to look and feel better and it works. 

So far this fall I’ve gone through my closets and PURGED everything that was too small, old, worn and not flattering. It helped me to be able to see what I needed (like new jeans and sweaters) and what I had plenty of (tee-shirts and dresses).

After that, I went through my makeup. Out went mascara that I couldn’t remember how long I’d had it, and hair products that had been used once and pushed to the side.  There’s no use in me keeping around old products if I’m not going to use them.

Once all of that was done, I was ready to stay pampered over the winter. If you’re not used to increasing your self care when it gets cold, here are some things that I do to pamper myself! 

1. Use face masks regularly.

With cold, dry air hitting your face every day, a face mask can restore much needed moisture. The best part is that they’re inexpensive, so you don’t even have to spend a lot to pamper yourself.

2. Switch your moisturizer.

The light lotion you might have used during the summer isn’t going to do anything for you in the winter. I love to find a thick moisturizer that can keep away the cold weather ash and keep my skin nice and smooth.

3. Invest in a good razor.

I know what you’re thinking. Who shaves in the winter, right? Listen, y’all, I’ve finally learned that staying smooth helps you feel sexier under those bulky winter clothes. When you invest in a good razor, you don’t have even have to do a lot of work.

5. Increase your water intake. 

The cold weather makes me crave warm, rich drinks, but don’t forget to stay hydrated. Increase your water intake during the winter months so that your hair and skin keep looking good. 

6. Sleep well.

My favorite way to pamper myself is to get good sleep. I use a weighted sleep mask, comfortable jammies, and let everyone know that I’m off duty.

There’s a reason animals hibernate during the winter months and come back in the spring stronger and ready to face anything. Sleep, good sleep, is magical! 

Take care of yourself this winter, girlfriend. You deserve to be pampered. It’s the least you can do for yourself after continuing to run errands, carpool, and take care of business in the cold weather!
